Commercial Air Source Heat Pumps

Air-to-water heat pumps provide low-carbon space heating and hot water through radiators, underfloor heating or air handling units: a direct alternative to gas and oil boilers.

How they work

Low-carbon heat for wet heating systems.

An air source heat pump extracts heat from outdoor air and transfers it to water, which is then circulated to radiators, underfloor heating, fan coils or air handling units, and can heat domestic hot water via a cylinder.

Heat pumps are most efficient at lower flow temperatures, so a successful project depends on understanding the building’s heat loss and whether existing emitters can deliver comfort at those temperatures, or where upgrades are needed.

For buildings with significant hot water demand, such as care settings, leisure, hospitality and schools, air-to-water systems are often the right choice.

Our process

From feasibility to commissioning.

  • Feasibility: existing system, fuel use, heat loss, emitters, electrical capacity and space
  • Design: heat pump sizing, flow temperatures, buffer and cylinder strategy, controls
  • Hybrid options: retaining a boiler for peak loads where full replacement isn’t yet practical
  • Installation: outdoor units, hydraulic connections, controls and integration with existing plant
  • Commissioning & maintenance: setup, performance checks and ongoing servicing

For domestic-scale projects claiming government grants, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme requires installation by an MCS-certified installer. Ask about certification for any project where you intend to claim funding.

Useful answers

Common questions

Can an air source heat pump work with our existing radiators?

Sometimes. It depends on heat loss and radiator sizes at lower flow temperatures. Some emitters may need upgrading. We assess this during feasibility.

Do they provide hot water?

Yes, with a suitable cylinder, and with appropriate controls for legionella management.

What is a hybrid system?

A heat pump working alongside a boiler, with the boiler covering peak demand. It can be a practical first step.

How much space is needed?

Outdoor space for the units with good airflow and access, plus internal space for buffer vessels and cylinders.
